1. Prepare Your Resume

You worked so hard on your education and perfecting your skills, now is the time to show it! Your resume is more important than you would think. Take the time to organize it and present it in a way that shows just how professional and suitable you are for a career in the beauty industry. Some things you should consider including in your resume are:

  • Your top work qualities.
  • Links to your social media profiles.
  • Contact info of your references.
  • Beauty skills you specialize in.
  • Name of the school you receive your training at.

The list above gives you a few ideas of what we would highly recommend you include in your resume. The final touch every resume should have is something that will help you stand out! That could be a quote from your favorite beauty artist, something about you that is interesting or light-hearted, or why you entered into the beauty industry. Another way to set yourself apart from the crowd is an interesting looking resume. You’re a creative, after all! Check out these unique and artistic design suggestions from Hloom.

2. Do Your Research and Be Prepared

Many people think that when applying for a new job, the employer is the one that decides if you make the cut. We’re here to tell you that is not entirely true.

You are interviewing them just as much as they are interviewing you! You are the one that decides if you accept the job or not. That’s why it’s important to do your research. Before you go into an interview, it’s crucial that you know what the company does, what their priorities are, and what position you are applying for. While you are researching for the job you want, take the time to prepare yourself for the interview you will be walking into. You will want to be prepared for any questions that you might be asked during the interviews. Some common questions might include:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • What are your strongest traits?
  • Tell me about a time you felt weak or unprepared in your job.
  • Why do you want to work in this salon/spa?
  • What attracted you to our salon/spa?
  • What were you doing before you decide to enter the beauty industry?
  • What do you know about our salon/spa and the services we offer?

It’s important to be prepared by researching the job that you want. When you are prepared you will come across more confident in yourself.

You might be given the opportunity to ask questions about the job you’re applying for. Here are a few that we suggest you ask!

  • What do you like most about your job?
  • What made you decide to work here?
  • What are the goals of the salon/spa for the next five years?
  • What about me makes you think I’d be a good fit for this job?

3. Build Your Portfolio

Your portfolio is just as important as your resume. A portfolio can be the final nudge for an employer to hire you as well as an excellent place to show examples of why you would benefit their salon or spa. Make sure to put in time and dedication to your portfolio to showcase your skills, talent, and successful projects that you have worked on. Begin your interview on the right foot! If you are feeling lost in what to include in your portfolio, here is what we suggest:

  • Photographs of hairstyles, hair colors, and haircuts that you created.
  • Your resume.
  • Letters of recommendation.
  • Events that you have worked on.

4. Look the Part

Looking your best can really set you apart from other applicants. We all know the saying, “dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” Interviewing in the beauty industry can be more intimidating than an average interview because the way you present yourself in your style will be noticed right away. If you are unsure of what to wear, give yourself time to prepare.Try on different outfits throughout the week to find a look that will wow your interviewer!

Here are some tips on making sure you look the part before you step into your interview.

Make sure your hair is done.
It may seem straightforward, but you’d be surprised how many stylists think that a plain ol’’ bun looks great. However, we suggest if you’re going to wear an updo you try something a bit more adventurous. Show off the skills you have on your own hair.

Do your makeup.
This is basically the same rule as your hair. Don’t go overboard with your makeup, but do your makeup professionally. Pretend you’re doing makeup for a model who is about to go on a business professional editorial shoot.

Wear salon-ready clothing.
All black is a pretty standard uniform at most salons and spas. We suggest showing off your wardrobe at your interview, but still keep it professional. Add a few pieces of personality. Your personality should shine through even though you’re dressed for an interview.

5. Believe In Yourself!

At the end of the day, the most important thing to remember is to believe in yourself! People can tell if you have confidence in yourself. When they see that, they have confidence in you. You have worked hard on perfecting your skills, it’s time to make a potential career out of it.
