If you’re considering a career in beauty, one of the first questions you may ask is: How long does it take to become a cosmetologist in Pennsylvania? The answer depends on the training path you choose and whether you attend school full-time or part-time.

Pennsylvania Cosmetology License Requirements

To become a licensed cosmetologist in Pennsylvania, the State Board of Cosmetology requires applicants to complete one of the following:

  • 1,250 hours in a licensed cosmetology school
  • 2,000 hours in a board-approved apprenticeship program

Most students choose the cosmetology school route because it offers structured training, hands-on practice, and preparation for the state licensing exam.

How Long Does 1,250 Hours Take?

The timeline depends on your schedule:

  • Full-time day students: minimum of 8 months
    • First 10 weeks in the class: Monday- Friday 9:00-4:30
    • Once taking clients: Tuesday- Saturday 9:00- 4:30
  • Night students / part-time schedules: minimum of 15 months
    • Tuesday,Wednesday and Thursday 5:00-8:30
    • Saturday 9:00- 4:30

Some students may take longer depending on attendance, personal schedule, or school calendar.

What You Learn in Cosmetology School

A Pennsylvania cosmetology program typically includes training in:

  • Hair cutting, coloring, and styling
  • Chemical texture services
  • Skincare basics
  • Nail care
  • Sanitation and safety
  • Client communication

This combination of classroom instruction and practical experience helps students build real salon-ready skills.
